Our Men in Formation

The initial formation process includes:

Postulancy: a period of one year that currently takes place in Berkley, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. The postulancy may be extended to a second year for those who may need additional time. During this process the individual lives with friars and participates in their daily life. Classes are given in basic topics such as: Liturgy, Catholicism, and Music.

Novitiate: the second phase of initial formation is one year, dedicated to prayer and spiritual development, at the end of which he professes temporary vows for one year. During this period the individual receives the Franciscan habit with a simple cord. The cord with three knots represents the vows of Poverty, Obedience and Chastity. The novitiate is currenty located in Burlington, Wisconsin and novices from all seven Franciscan Provinces of the United States participate.

Post-Novitiate: The third period of initial formation takes place in Chicago, Illinois. In this phase the individual finishes his Initial Franciscan Formation and any further education that he may need to prepare him for his initial ministry in the province. During this phase those individuals who are going to be ordained as priests will begin their education in theology at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago. During this time the individual renews his vows every year until he is ready to profess the vows for life. Temporary vows last at least three years before taking the vows for life. Should it be necessary the friar may continue in temporary vows up to nine years before making Solemn Profession.
