Chowning Way

One of the newest road signs in Perry County, Kentucky, has a familiar name attached to it. Chowning Way was named after Fr. Mike, Pastor of Mother of Good Counsel in Hazard. The name was chosen by the Housing Development Alliance in honor of Mike’s many contributions to the organization, according to Neil Bedwell, director of finance for the HDA. The Alliance, similar in mission to Habitat for Humanity, builds and repairs homes for those in need. Mike, the current Treasurer, previously served as Chair. "He was also instrumental in them receiving a grant from CCHD – the Catholic Campaign for Human Development," says Pat Riestenberg, pastoral associate at MGC. "The sign was already up before Mike C. ever heard about it. One of our parishioners is an electrical inspector and he was out inspecting the electric when he saw the sign. He is the one who sent the picture to Fr. Mike. The new road has three new homes on it, all built by the HDA."
