Franciscan

Simple yet profound prayer

I was thrilled with the great turnout of friars for the Cincinnati premiere of the docudrama The Sultan and the Saint last Sunday evening. More than just watching the very interesting and informative film about Francis of Assisi meeting Malik Al-Kamil a long time ago, it gave us an opportunity to meet and interface with and support the efforts of the Archdiocese, Xavier University’s Brueggeman Center for Dialogue, and the local Muslim community in promoting understanding and respect, so desperately needed today. It was exciting for me just to be in that atmosphere and breathe that air!

Unexpectedly I was called up to participate in the closing prayer with the Imam. Lucky for me our Franciscan tradition has the beautiful, simple, and yet profound prayer asking to be instruments of peace. The Islamic Center expressed appreciation for our presence and is interested in working with us in future efforts to further this important exchange. May we truly be those instruments.
